A walk From the Wild Edge by Jake Tyler is one of the inspirations for this website.
Jake finds himself in a very dark place and with the help of his family, friends and his Mum’s dog, uses a walking challenge to correct his course and find a way to enjoy and embrace life again.
An open and honest story of how Jake used walking to rebuild his life and happiness. The quote below is so true of so many of us (me included)
‘ Human beings are essentially 30,000 – year – old hardware trying to run twenty – first – century software . It’s no wonder we crash now and again . ’
To be honest, I don’t like reading mountaineer books. But this book had me hooked, probably because I was going through my own dark place when I started to read it. Although probably more like an off white when compared to Jake’s experiences!
I really believe that one of the most life – affirming things a human can do is spend a few days hiking . The process of walking for miles surrounded by trees and fields , finding a place to camp , spending the night in the wild and packing everything away again the following morning and continuing to walk is as close as most of us can get to testing what we were designed for .
Jakes challenges himself to walk around the UK on a very limited budget. The book is about his physical and mental journey and reminds us that there are lots of good people in the world who are more than happy to listen and help.
“You know when people ask what you’d do if you had three wishes ? Well , before eternal life , a billion quid , world peace , all of that , I think I’d choose to live in a perpetual sensation of feeling like I’m slowly taking my boots off . After walking twenty miles in a day it’s honestly the single greatest sensation I’ve ever experienced .”
The book is also available on Kindle so you can take it with you on your next walk, find somewhere sunny and find your own Walking Inspiration
