This walk has many different starting points and I would recommend that you choose your starting point based on what time you want to arrive at a pub or cafe on the way.

The walk has the added benefit of passing two railway stations (Freshford and AvonCliff) so it is an easy walk to do if you are coming from Bath and do not have a car. Note that both train stations are “request only” stops so you need to make sure the conductor is aware you want to get off or you will end up in Bradford on Avon.

The walk has 3 main uphill sections and is one of the hilliest routes we have added so far. Hence the suggestion to take your time and enjoy on of the 3 refreshment stops on the way (The Inn at Freshford, Cross Guns at Avoncliff, Angelfish Cafe at Dundas Aqueduct) I have enjoyed all three and would recommend all of them but be warned that in the summer months and at weekends they can get very busy so may be worth calling ahead.

There is a transportation theme to this walk as it follows the River, Railway, and Canal down the valley. You cross the railway line four times, once via a level crossing and twice via an Aqueduct (Dundas and Avoncliff) and you cross the river twice both times on the Aqueducts.
